I little while ago I joined in with Natural Suburbia's Valentine Swap. I was lucky enough to be teamed up with the lovely Christina from Fruits of Heart would you like to see what she sent me?

Of course you would....

Let me just say before the reveal that Christina is a very talented fibre artist and her felt work is extraordinary. I am so lucky to have been gifted by her.

Beautifully wrapped and look at those heart buttons....

Christina made the felt for this little purse herself! and isn't the bookmark gorgeous....

Did you notice the little owl button? My favourite! And inside the little purse with the adorable heart button for closure were some pretty special needles, just perfect for sewing in ends and grafting my knitting together....

And finally my absolute favourite, 'Loving Granny'
Isn't she perfect, just makes you think of all the nice things that come with Grandma's.
I am amazed at how Christina has made her so alive. I should have taken a photo of her hair from behind because it is exquisite. All done up in a roll and looks so real. How does she do that with just felting needles?

Thank you so much Christina for a lovely Valentines Swap parcel. I feel very spoilt and all of it is treasured.

I had packaged up my parcel and sent it away before I realised that I didn't have any photos (blame the school holidays) but funnily enough I also made a little felt pocket and embroidered it with little felt flowers for Christina and put it in a little organza bag.....great minds think alike :-)

Finally here is a bit of fun for all you Valentine's Lovers....

Over here we will be having a Birthday so hearts all round for everyone, even if it isn't cool at 11 to have heart on your birthday! (the party is on Friday at the local pool and I have promised not a heart will be in sight)

Yesterday I put down my complicated socks that I have been knitting and cranked up the sewing machine. I had bought some lovely Retro Fabric from Spotlight ages ago with the intention of making some pretty snazzy new Pyjamas.

I did everything correctly, just like my mum taught me. Even if I did have to ring her and check that I was doing it right (thanks Mum xx ) My brain has a lot of trouble thinking back to front especially when it comes to sewing....

- pre washed and ironed the fabric
- made a pattern from my 'old faithfuls' which I realised are now 10yrs old, no wonder they were getting a bit thin in the seat!
- ironed and pinned all the seams
- zig-zag the raw edges ( no overlocker here )
- proper waistband for the elastic
- even figured out how to add the extra length of fabric on the legs so there were no raw seams inside. I even went to the extra trouble to make sure both those pieces were the same so that they wouldn't look mis-matched!

Ta Dah! Don't you just love that fabric.

Now can you see where I went wrong?

Bugger and some other tasteful expletives were used when I realised! They are still cool PJ's though and I love them :-)

* for those of you who are not fabulous quilters and couldn't pick the mistake I didn't cut and turn the back piece of fabric before I cut the pattern so one leg has the elephants UPSIDE DOWN! I kinda like it that way now because I don't have to turn my head to look at the cuteness. The next pair will be better ;-)

Some time ago in some bushland south of Cairns my husband and his good mate were cutting timber from fallen trees. They found a 'huge' fallen tree and were able to cut quite an amount into slabs using a 5ft chain saw mill. Billy kept a large slab and some pieces that could be turned into legs. The wood was then left in a shed to season.

30 years later it was brought out to see daylight and a friend of ours has turned it into this lovely table The timber is Brown Beech. It has the look of Red Cedar but is a harder wood.

It is my favourite this week, isn't it awesome! Big enough for all of us and more AND just the right height for my crafting....

Hooray it is finally here!

2012

I don't know why I'm so excited about new year but this one feels good. The last two years have been a bit of an uphill battle for our business and right now I feel like we have turned a corner, roll on 2012!

I have challenged myself to master sock knitting this year. I have started many socks but I NEVER get to finish the pair. Second sock syndrome I've heard it called ;-)

So.....

I have joined in with a ttl mystery sock KAL.

No excuses now! I get a clue every week till the end of January which means I will have a finished pair of socks in February!

I've raided my stash and found this PINK superwash merino from Dragonfly Fibres....yummy!

It was pretty slippery winding it into a ball on my ball winder, hence the messy ball of yarn! Hopefully that won't affect the sock knitting....stay tuned!

We Wish You a Merry Christmas

December has flown past and believe it or not it is the day before Christmas. My boys are on their summer holiday break so computer time is limited during the day, although those who follow me on Facebook know that I often post there. The beauty of having a cool mobile phone :-p By the time evenings roll around and I can sit down for a breather I am exhausted and for the last few weeks I have also been madly finishing off some presents.

I thought I would let the pictures speak for this post,

- have been doing lots of swimming, although the creek is desperately shallow. The rains are due any minute!

- had a visit from this lovely Christmas beetle. I haven't seen any this colour since I was a child, isn't he gorgeous....

- entered a competition and won a fabulous prize! Ethan and I had a lot of fun taking that photo....

And here we are on the eve of Christmas. The excitement is tangible in this house with two youngsters waiting for Santa. I am finishing off the Gingerbread house and the oven is on so it is HOT, HOT, HOT... sounds like a typical tropical Aussie Christmas. Family are arriving at our house tomorrow so I am in a cleaning frenzy as well, not sure why as it will all need doing again after everyone has left :-)

I found the cutest little Angel washcloth pattern for Christmas and she is made of a lovely peachy coloured cotton. I added in some of my handmade soap in Lavender and also a small x-mas tag for hanging on what ever takes your fancy.

I think my partner will be happy with her parcel :-)

Silly Pony!

This week I was going to tell you all about my lovely neighbours and how great neighbours were a FTF for me BUT I have changed my mind and will do that next time as this weeks FTF is this....

I am not usually a drinker but this week I was sick and my lovely husband brought home a six pack of Guinness for the restorative properties we all know it has. After you see the next series of photos you will know why I was glad that he had....

This is what happens when a naughty little pony climbs inside the hay feeder to get to the last skerrick of hay left and then turns around to come back out and gets his big fat butt caught between the panels....

He dragged the hay feeder about 50ft before it came apart and he collapsed onto the ground....

Luckily my lovely neighbours also heard the noise and came over to help and I ran to the house to get the sedative. It is hard to get it in the right place when the horse is upside down. While we were trying to figure out what to do Raven relaxed and moved a bit and my neighbour was able to wriggle the hay feeder over the pony's hip bone and he was free. Nothing wrong, no broken bones, no torn skin, only a bitten tongue for being greedy....

Goodness this little man has come along way from when I first rescued him. He was so trusting, he calmly waited for me to help him out of his mess and afterwards carried on eating grass like nothing at all had happened to him....

I on the other hand needed this....

See Guinness is good for you, for the strength of course ;-)

As I was making tea last night I thought 'this has got to be most favourite thing ever' so of course it had to go in a Favourite Things Friday post.

I bought this Tupperware quiche dish about 8 yrs ago and use it all the time. I never have to grease it and I just wash it up in the sink with warm water.

Look at how easily and cleanly that quiche came out onto the plate with just a few quick flips and a lift of the dish....Simple, I smile every time! The quiche recipe is super easy and no fuss as well. I like these kinds of meals. :-)

I feel like I have been absent for ages! October is a busy month for me, full of birthdays and visitors. Lots of fun but not much time for blogging :-)

I'm joining in with FTF this week because the reason I get a lot of visitors apart from celebrating our birthdays is because our town is Jacaranda Town in October.

The Jacaranda's are everywhere and it is so pretty. Purple as far as the eye can see and purple snow all over the ground.

Socktoberfest, Blogtoberfest, Bloggy Holiday

I was full of good intentions to join in the Blogtoberfest and Socktoberfest and regale you all with tales of my crafting ability, but NOPE it was school holidays and I ended up having a bloggy holiday instead.

The boys and I took a trip to Cairns and visited the Great Barrier Reef. I picked a small island that is only an hour on the boat because the weather had been very windy and I had no idea if either of the boys got sea-sick? My family immigrated to Australia when I was 3 and we came over on a boat (ten pound poms), I was sea-sick for most of the trip....who knows if it is hereditary?

We spent the night in Cairns at the beautiful Oasis Resort as it is a 2 hour drive down the hill for us, and then the next morning boarded the Big Cat to Green Island....

The weather couldn't have been better and we had a fantastic day snorkelling, eating, exploring and sight seeing....

The trip in the semi submersible was a highlight for the boys, the fish came right up to the windows. We saw a turtle and Cullen saw a stingray!

I did make a start on socks for the Soctoberfest but I didn't get very far. We are only half way thru the month so hopefully I will get one project done on my WIP list....

This pair of socks was started last year to wear in my hiking boots as they are nice and thick and will hopefully stop blisters. I got this far on the first sock and then the wet season came in and my sock stalled....

This is a pair of socks that I started using some awesome OPAL sock yarn. The colour-way is called Peacock and its lovely. The only problem was that half way through I realised that I was using bigger needles that I thought I was (don't know where my brain was when I picked the needles out of the container?) which meant that the sock was a lot bigger than it should have been. So I shortened the length of the foot section and continued on to practice my Kitchener stitch and graft the toe....that is why this sock looks like it was knit for someone with a club foot! I have unpicked the end and recast on the yarn onto the right size needles and am trying a toe up sock with a fine yarn for the first time. I'll keep you posted :-)

Maybe next year I will join the Blogtoberfest? For now I have a few catch up posts and I will try and space them out till the end of the month.

This last photo I think says it all about our day out on the Great Barrier Reef, we had a lovely time and none of us wanted to come home....

Sewing Sunday

This week it is all about the boys, after all it is school holidays....

Cullen and Ethan have been playing with my stash of remnant upholstery fabric that a friend donated to us and making some nice pictures. Yesterday they did some creating and then decided that the next step was the sewing machine....

Such concentration, I love it....

Last night Ethan designed a prototype on paper and this morning he cut out the pattern and sewed it together almost entirely by himself. This is his Squid....

Cullen made the above house and garden picture and decided he wanted to sew on the windows, door and roof. He did this almost entirely by himself too....

Last week was the end of the boys Hockey season. They won the Grand Final and the presentations were straight afterwards....

Trophy for winning the season and Cullen was awarded 'Best Defender' for the Under 10 Boys....

Ethan received an extra special award this year!
He was very proud of his achievement and so were we.

Well done and Congratulations boys!

I have been busy over the last few weeks helping my MIL and SIL who at the moment cannot drive for themselves. Luckily I work from home so my TAXI and messenger service is readily available.

I haven't had much time to craft or Blog but I just had to show you my new shoes, I LOVE them....

I love shoes!

I am no Imelda Marcos but show me a nice pair of flats, some cowboy boots or some chunky sandals and I'm gone. Luckily my hubby encourages me :-)

Mystery Wool Dying

This weekend was our annual get together for our Fibreartists Group 'The Coffee Drop Crafters'. We stay at one of our members houses on her Goat Stud and spend a bit more time than we usually do mingling, chatting, spinning, sharing ideas and having a meal together. When we meet fortnightly at Lake Eacham we often miss all of the members as many just come for a few hours either in the morning or the afternoon. This weekend is a great time to catch up for us all.

This year our lovely Ali offered to show us how she does her Rainbow Dying. Boy did we have some fun....

Rainbow Dying is a method of dying wool all in the one pot and ending up with a mix of colours like a rainbow. By playing around with the colour mixes you are able to produce a wide variety of colour combinations. Its a lot of fun because every time is different and its a bit of a mystery as to what will come out of the pot.

Preparing the wool for dying....

This was not a method I have tried before and it involves damp wool and hardly any water. I usually dye in a deep pot with a lot of liquid or I handpaint my wool so I was a bit nervous about burning my wool.

After getting the pot up to heat it is left to sit and cool down and for the dye to soak into the wool, then it is rinsed....

Awesome Colours Ali!! ....

We use a lot of dye for this method but none of it is wasted. After the first batch of wool is taken out another lot is added to the same dye bath and it is heated up again. If any colour is still in the pot after that another batch of wool can be added. Look at the colours that were made from three different batches of wool in the same dye bath. First the Rainbow, then the Blue and finally the Lavender colour. What fun! ....

This is the wool that I dyed this weekend....

A commercial wool in a natural white colour that took up more dye than any of our fleeces or tops. Look how dark it is! ....

Some plaited roving. The one on the left was at the bottom of the pot so the colours are deeper while the one on the right was placed on top of the first skein and does not take up as much of the dye so it is lighter in shades....

This roving was on top of my commercial wool and look how light this has turned out. Its amazing how different wool takes up the colours....

These are a mixture of sheep fleece (the really crimpy stuff) and Angora Goat fleece. Look how shiny that looks with the colour! Blue/Green....

Yellow/Red....

I added some of my own spun yarn to a pot of my friend which was all yellow and red, she wanted to try for some tomato red hopefully? My yarn was on the top and I got amazing colours! How nice is this....can't wait to make something out of these colours. Not a very big skein though so not sure what it will end up being? ....

I took this photo at the end of Sunday and it made me laugh because it looks like 'Fire in my Belly', doing this workshop certainly gave me some new ideas for my dying and it was such fun to spend the weekend with my friends instead of just a few hours once a fortnight. It certainly inspired us all....

Finally these are the colours I was playing around with during the week with hot and cold dyes. A sorbet! I certainly have enough spinning to get on with now :-)

Here she is 'Felicity'....

After a year of struggling with my older model I bit the bullet and bought a brand new spinning wheel!

A bit of research and quizzing of friends' and I purchased a MAJACRAFT AURA from New Zealand.

It was the one wheel that could spin from laceweight to artyarn without having to change attachments. She is a joy and so easy to spin with. Isn't she beautiful!....

Its like driving a Cadillac after the old paddock ute!! So smooth, and Fast, a dream come true....

Look here is Clover introducing her calf to the rest of the menagerie. The horses are fascinated by the new edition. Young man is taking it all in his stride. We have a name, after much deliberation by the family we have decided to name him 'Seamus'. (Thanks Linda)

His Dad's name is Douglas so it fitted right in. We had lots of lovely suggestions for his name and it was funny to see that my local friends and other Aussies came up with names that should have been on a dinner plate and the overseas friends all thought of nice Regal Bull names.

Unfortunately we can only keep him until he is 6 mths old because after that his dad will fight him. He will go and live with my friend who will raise him until he is 2yrs old and then yes, he will be in the freezer. I can't do it but my friend can!

So he has a double barrelled name. The boys wanted to extend his name so he is to be 'Seamus Meatballs'.... he will always be Seamus to me though!

I have spent half the day in my Pyjamas spinning and making yarn with 'Felicity', want to see who else is being crafty today?

The Lambeth Walk

This is a little trubute to my Mum and Dad....

Mum and Dad have just celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary! Woo Hoo! Medals all round!

They went to Fortnum and Mason for a truly scrumptious afternoon tea and then to the Globe Theatre for a show. Mum said they were tempted to do the Lambeth Walk across the Millennium Bridge but refrained and caught the bus instead......They are on a promise to do it on their 60th!!

Yes Clover has finally given birth to her calf....

And Tiny! This picture gives you an idea of how small he really is. He is about the size of a Medium Poodle....

Look at those eyelashes, he's won me!

Now he doesn't have a name, want to give him one? I will pick his name after the weekend when everyone has commented. If Blogger lets you! Just email me if you can't OK.

Amazingly he was born on the same day that Clover had her first calf last year, at least this time it wasn't in the middle of the night and she had the sense to go into the shed out of the midday sun. He will be safe from Dingo's in there and out of the cold wind.

Hooray I can finally get a good nights sleep! :-)

Clover the COW...

I have hardly slept for over a week now as my cow Clover is due to have her second baby any minute. Well I thought it was any minute? For two weeks now I have been haunting her every move and she is just getting fatter and fatter, I don't know how she is able to walk? She is only a miniature cow and she has short legs so at the moment she is as wide as she is tall....

This is her two weeks ago! She seems to be wondering what is going on in her belly? So am I!....

This is today. Look at the look she is giving me, its like she is saying "Not you again!" I have been going out in the cold and the drizzle last thing at night (not to mention all the times during the day I go and check her) with a pathetic little torch to find her in the paddock to make sure she is OK before I go to bed. She is fine, I'm the one who is getting cold and wet and sleep deprived!

No one seems
particularly perturbed do they!

Clover just wants more food but for her that is not so unusual. Her and her sister just RAN down the hill and around the corner to the feed trough, to see if I was filling it up, without a care in the world. I am sure bubby will arrive when she/he is good and ready. Clover had no problems last time so I am sure she will be fine, I'm just being a typical worried mother. I hope it's not too much longer, I'd like a good night sleep! :-)

I have been following along with Kiwiyarns current obsession with Alpaca and admiring her gorgous knits that she has been creating. Last week Kiwiyarns released the pattern for her Annabella hat. Totally Gorgeous!

I love the softness of Alpaca (who wouldn't) and this hat has the most lovely stitch design around the brim. I do have a few hats to tuck my hair into so I have modified her pattern just a little bit. I wanted a hat that would grow with my hair so to speak. Also living in the tropics and suffering hormonally at the moment means that any hat is constantly being removed to let out steam! So I came up with this....

Is it a hat or is it a headband?....

It is lovely and soft and I love that trellis pattern. It is also in my favourite colours. :-)

Now I had better go outside and check on Clover AND wash this naughty little pony who must have heard me say I was going for a ride, he was white half an hour ago.....

Hooray its Friday again....

This week I am joining in with Shay at Quilting in my Pyjamas for her Favourite Things Friday. I don't join in every week because I sometimes lack the time to go and check out everyone else's Favourite Things but this week I have finished the bookwork so I can play all weekend on my computer....

This week is an extra special Favourite Thing. A few years ago I was researching patterns for knitted toys and I discovered this blog Little Cotton Rabbits. Lovely posts, beautiful photos, and the little Rabbits....

Well I fell in love! Who woudn't?

Julie once commented on how 'knitting was her sanity' and I thought to myself, I used to knit all the time, why don't I now? I picked up the needles again and the rest as they say is history. So you can see for me Julie's blog and her friendship are very special. I guess I see her as a mentor and an inspiration. Through Julie's blog I have rediscovered the joy of creating. I was introduced to blogland and have honed up my knitting skills, I have learnt to crochet, I started a blog of my own and best of all have met so many wonderful people who bring cheer and joy into my world.

Recently I was lucky enough to win a chance to purchase one of Julie's Little Cotton Rabbits....Oh JOY! I have been trying for 2 1/2 years to purchase one of her rabbits. They are absolutely divine and so the demand is high, it seems hundreds of people all over the world also love Little Cotton Rabbits.

'Clover' arrived this week to come and live at my house, she is adorable....

How sweet is she! Exquisitely knitted in a merino/angora blend and all her clothes are gorgeous cotton. Look at her little shoes!

Everything about 'Clover' was divine. The packaging (I didn't want to remove it), the little cards, she was beautifully wrapped, and of course Clover herself....

This week I am one happy camper....

Lutt-Witt aka 'Hoodie'

Here is the sweater that I have been knitting....

It is a Berroco Pattern called Lutt-Witt which is published in pattern book #301 Berroco Campus. The wool is Berroco Campus and it is a lovely wool/alpaca/acrylic mix. So soft and plied in an uneven thickness so although it is classified as a chunky yarn in spots it is quite fine.

I knitted it on 6.5mm straight needles.....

I also did a few modifications to the pattern to make the hoodie more to my taste.

I have widened the cuffs of the sleeves so they are more bell shaped and lengthened the sleeves as I always pull sweaters down over my fingers and figured if it was already there I wouldn't be stretching it.

Handy for yoga when I am doing relaxation on the floor. In winter the cold floor is not nice on the backs of my wrists so the longer sleeve solves this problem......

In the pattern the bobble pattern stops at the neckline and the ribbing continues in a narrower band up around the hood.

I love the bobble pattern it is the reason I chose this Hoodie.

I continued the bobbles up over the hood to give it a wider band around the face and a shorter hood. It now doesn't drag down my back and sits almost like a collar around my neck, very cosy.....

I didn't cast off the stitches around the neckline because I didn't want a hard edge pulling on my neck with the weight of the hood and I would have just had to repick up the stitches anyway. The pattern has a nice ribbing around the start of the neckline which pulls the shoulders into shape very nicely. I liked this little touch, you can just see the ribbing on the neckline in the right hand bottom corner of the photo above.

My Hoodie is lovely and light although it looks quite chunky and heavy, just perfect for a tropical winter. I now just have to block the hood and I'm waiting for some nice wooden buttons that I purchased of Etsy :-)

Blogger has been a bugger for me all week and is refusing to let me post so I have gone back to the old editor and it seems to be working. You will have to excuse the old outdated style. If it isn't bad enough that no one can comment on my blog now I have to put up with the outdated editor and try to think in reverse when adding in my photos.

Remember the lovely white wool that I spun a few weeks ago....

I 'Navaho' plied it, which means that is is 3 strands instead of 2 so it will be a bit of a chunky yarn....

Now I couldn't just leave it white could I....

Pre soaking....

A splash of a yummy colour....

Bring to the slow boil....

Add the vinegar and check after 5 mins to see if the colour is being absorbed into the fibre, looking good....

One more lot of vinegar and PERFECT....

Ready to go, isn't that colour just the best!

I have used Greener Shades, Heavy metal and acid free dyes. They are so easy to use and you can purchase them on line from Pancake and Lulu on Etsy. Best of all they are good for our enviroment and that makes me happy :-)

I washed and blocked the finished pieces of my 'hoodie'....

and I am now on the final straight, it is getting very heavy in my lap and I'm afraid it is looking HUGE!

I did knit the large because they showed the small on a lovely little model. I am not a petite little thing although I am short, I am definitely a sporty muscled physique and I love oversized jumpers. This one also only has a closure at the neck so it is open all the way down, I will need room to wear layers underneath it.

Here's hoping it will be OK once I have done the sewing up, fingers crossed XX

It is Sunday again! Although this week I am not in my Pyjamas because I have been doing bookwork for most of the day. What that has to do with being in my PJ's I don't know because I am at home. Maybe I feel like I should dress for work??

I have had a little play on the computer and I came up with this....

I couldn't resist!

I've been for a walk down to the bottom paddock to check out Clover who is due to have her second calf in about a week....

She is starting to look like a barrel on legs!

I finished the boys pencil cases. They saw some camouflage material last time we were in Spotlight and insisted I buy it. I was asked to make pillow cases for their beds to match the blankets I made a few weeks ago. There was a small amount left over....

I was working on my cowl. I ripped it back three times and I still managed to have a double twist in it??? I have decided that the wool is telling me it doesn't want to be a cowl! So it has been frogged yet again and put into the back of the stash cupboard for a future project.

I did start this project though and that seems to be going a lot better. I had the wool from last year and it just needed to be wound into balls as it came as skeins....

I have a pattern for a 'hoodie' with a mock cable running up the front panels. I purchased the wool online and thought it was more of an orange colour (computer monitors can make colours deceiving). It has some orange in it but it is more a purple/blue mix. It makes me think of Scottish Heather.

Natural Horsemanship, why would you even try anything else???

My blog is usually a crafty type of blog but those who know me well know that my other love is horses....

This video makes me cry....both tears of sadness for the misunderstanding and then happiness for the people who 'get it'

This lady Stacey Westfall REALLY gets it! Such a delight to watch....

This is Georgia Bruce Australia's Equestrian Paralympian. She also gets it! She won bronze in Dressage in the last Olympics. Georgia is a local to my area and I did a clinic with her on how to Clicker Train Your Horse. I have used this method before with dogs but it was a real eye opener to learn how to work better WITH our horses.

I have recently rescued this little fellow and he had been mistreated somewhere along the way so he is very scared and nervous around people. We don't know his history but the vet thinks he is about 2yrs old, still a full male and we think he is a Welsh Pony cross. We could all be totally wrong!!

I have had him four weeks now and been doing the positive reward Clicker Training. At first he was totally untouchable and very frightened. I bonded with him straight away and rewarded him everytime he came towards me and persevered until I could put a halter on him and attatch a lead rope. He is now at liberty in the paddock with all the rest of the gang and he comes up to me willingly for a pat and a scratch (no food involved).

Yesterday he was sleeping in the front of the stables and another horse charged out of the stables to get away from a tetchy mate, the horse ran right past him obviously running away from something ( or someone) and the little fellow just kept on sleeping. Didn't bat an eyelid! It gave me an enourmous amout of pleasure to see that as it means he is relaxed and happy at our house.

They say Happiness is owning a horse (or 5 as in my case) :-)

The Coincidental Tour de Fleece

Coincidentally as others are extolling the virtues of the lovely fleece and spinning, I too have been playing at my wheel....

This is Merino roving and in my favourite autumn colours. It comes from Dragonfly Fibres over on Etsy and they have named it Turning Leaves, how could I resist? Definitely ' The Colours of Happiness'!!

Spun into a Single....

And plyed together. After resting the newly spun yarn needs a little bath. You would thing that wool that has already been processed and then dyed would be clean wouldn't you? After all I have only handled it minimally.....

I'm always surprised at how much dirt a fleece can hold! My yarn is now drying and will soon reveal its lovely plumpness and I will be able to make something out of my new colours.

We went to the stunning Lake Eacham today for my fibrecrafters morning and the boys had fun exploring the walking tracks that surround the lake. After I did a bit of spinning (and chatting ), the boys and I walked right round the lake. It's a lovely walk and this time was the first time we have all done it without any complaining from the smaller legs brigade. Here are some photos (not the clearest because it is dark in the rainforest)....

Look at the roots hanging down from the fig that has grown all over its host tree....

These little flowers drop from one of the rainforest trees and ever since the boys have been tiny we have called them the stars of the forest, they look just like the stars at night scattered all over the forest floor....

Pyjama Party Sunday

It's Sunday again and yes I am in my PJ's...I love Sundays!!

Today though Billy has the boys and is delivering loads of firewood so that I can catch up on the end of financial year bookwork, YUCK!! I am not a fan of bookwork, BUT it is my job to do it.
Billy spreads the fertilizer in his truck and I do all the bookwork, we are a team. I am sure when he is having a troublesome day with the truck he says YUCK as well. :-)

Have I shown you our truck?? We are proud of it as it is the only one in North Queensland....

This photo was taken when we first got her in 2007, I rarely see her now as she is kept in our shed which is situated about 50kms away, closer to all the farms that we spread fertilizer on. Billy only brings her home if he has a job up our way, saves him doing double driving.

She is a mighty machine. Four wheel drive and goes anywhere. The farmers love her. Billy has been spreading fertilizer on the farms up here for about 20yrs now. He knows what everyone's farm looks like, and he takes that truck up and down some mountains. I have been in the truck (before kids) and I can tell you nerves of steel are required. The boys sometimes go for a ride but only on a flat farm. Its too easy to slip off a hill.

I have been doing a bit of crochet....

I am crocheting a cowl in that lovely chunky stitch that my friends hat was made in. The cowl has a twist in it so that it sits nicely around your neck except after doing about 10 rows I noticed that I have two twists....

Grrrrr....

I figured that you loop it around your neck anyway so I will just loop it before I put it round my neck....Hmmmm I may still be frogging it??

Awwww.....

I managed to finish a hat and mitts for a friend down South who requested some warm items for her week at an outdoor horse event....

I really love how that stitch turned out, nice and chunky! I think I might just have to make myself a cowl now.

My spinning has progressed to the resting stage before I can ply the singles together, lovely colours aren't they. Look how bright the white is!! I am going to dye that when I have figured out the instructions. I have imperial instructions and this is a metric country....will have to put my maths head on!

And how about these little cuties....

The little furry fellow is turning out a bit like his Dad. We might be keeping him :-)

Lucy Rabbit is my little darling who decided that she wanted to spend this year travelling so she asked me to arrange for her to visit my lovely friends in Blogland.

Bag packed and ready to go :-)

She was lucky enough to start her journey with my Sister In Law and they both caught the plane to Brisbane where Lucy accompanied Carolyne on her Doctors visits and then stayed with her keeping her company before she left to come home. Lucy travelled on to stay with Kate and her family of Dash Robin Designs. HERE is her post about Lucy's visit, they had such a fun time.

Pyjama Party Sunday

Today I did spend all day in my PJ's until I changed at 4 o'clock and went for a horse ride, I probably could have done that in my PJ's too as we live in such a remote area but horse hair is a B***H to get out of your clothes, not to mention the washing machine :-)

So what was I up to all day in my PJ's? Well I spent the day using this....

and I even cut out the material for Billy's quilt....

All in all I had a very productive day, might just have had something to do with Aunty Carolyne taking the boys to the Stock Cars for most of the morning and Billy delivering firewood all day as well. House to myself!! Bliss!

This week after dusting I realised that one of my favourite things that I look at every day rarely gets shown to anyone else! Favourite Things Friday is the perfect opportunity to show off these items that are a treasure of mine....

This gorgeous set belonged to my Grandma. It sat on her dressing table and when I stayed I watched her use it every morning and every night. It reminds me so much of her.

Blogger is being very naughty with my posts, but I gather that I am not the only one which means they are not being selective so I won't take it personally. My comments from all you lovely people did trickle thru eventually.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU so much for all the lovely wishes and hugs sent my way. I have had a few slow days and spent some quiet time reliving the good old days with my mate. I had Tally for 15 years so we had done a lot of great things together. At one stage of our partnership I used to ride him to work and he used to wait in the paddock with all the dairy cows and then I would ride him home. One time we finished late and it was dark by the time we left for home and he took me home. I couldn't see a thing but he could and I just let him have his head and he walked me home. He was such a good boy. Although I had him a long time he came from the racetrack so his hard early life eventually caught up with him and his arthritis was nasty in winter.

At least now he is free from pain and doesn't have to suffer thru this winter which is promising to be a cold one....first day of winter today and it was 0 degrees this morning, Brrrrr!

I'm going down to the horse paddock now to cuddle and chat with the rest of the gang as they too are a bit out of sorts now their fearless leader is no longer with us. The company is healing :-)

Today is again Sunday! My the weeks are flying past, I can't believe it is almost the middle of the year. Where has the time gone??

I have been creative in my PJ's again but this week it was on Thursday night...

I was in Cairns at Spotlight on Thursday and saw this lovely fleece material. Nice camouflage, just what the boys would love and as it has been getting a bit chilly in the evenings and early mornings I thought this fleece would be perfect for a little project I have had up my sleeve for a while.

I made a QUILT!!!

Well a sort of quilt, it has a front and a back but I have to admit that I didn't sew it!!

Here is how I made it....

What you need:

- fleece material that is the same colour on the front and back, I had 5 metres to make two blankets.

- Scissors
- Ruler

Fold the material in half and cut so that you have two rectangles the same size. I did this twice as I was making two blankets. Lay the fleece on a table with the wrong sides placed together.

Decide how long you would like the fringe around the edge and cut all four corners away to this length. My fringe is going to be 4inches long.
(love how I have combined the imperial and metric measurements, shows my age!)
Sorry the photos are a bit blurry but it was the evening, the light was terrible and I had two eager recipients waiting...

Measure and cut the fringe all the way around. (all sides of the blanket). My fringe is 4 inches long and about a ruler width.

Here is my project manager! How cute is her little face :-)

Now here is the fun part! No Sew....
Just tie the two sides together with a double knot (reef for those who like neatness) and work your way around the blanket until you have finished.

The blanket will bunch up a bit from tying the knots so when you have finished just gently stretch it back to the original shape. It will tear the fringe cuts a bit more but the good thing about fleece is that it does not fray so you can gently ease it out and it looks great.

The first blanket took about 1 hour to make and because it was getting late and the boys were waiting and I am a cheat......I didn't even measure the second one! Just cut and tied. Half an hour tops!!

So do I qualify for making a quilt?? or am I being just a bit too cheeky ;-)

Favourite Things Friday

Hooray it is FTF! I love Fridays and the feeling that it is the last day of the working week, the boys have 2 days off and we don't have the busy school runs and it is almost Sunday which means I get to sleep in and Billy does the Dad thing for the day.

This week when I was in Cairns I found in a small bakery....BAGELS!!

One of my favourite things is a bagel and unfortunately we don't get them up here. No idea why?? I miss them so much I even have plans occasionally to boil and bake my own (who am I kidding!)

When I lived in Sydney at Bondi Beach I used to have bagels on the weekends for breakfast and if I am honest probably lunch and tea, beat cooking properly.

So today I got to have one of my all time favourite things for lunch....

A smoked salmon, cream cheese and caper bagel. If I had had any rocket that would have also been added....Delicious!!

It's Sunday!

Hubby is at work all day today so its a great excuse to spend the day in our PJ's :-)

The boys are getting to know all about electricity with a fantastic set that Grandpop sent home with us when we last visited Sydney. See they made a light!

I have been finishing a present for my horse riding buddy, Ebony. She is turning 18 next month and asked me to knit her something.

Ebony explained the mystery of crochet to me so how could I refuse to knit her a present :-)
Ebony has also just got a job at a horse riding establishment as a trainee horse riding instructor. Right up her alley and I know she is going to love it.
It means that I probably won't be seeing her as much for a ride here, as its a bit of a travel for her to work and I imagine the last thing she will want to do on her days off is ride horses.

So a sneak peak.....can't show you the pattern as it would spoil the surprise. All Ebony knows is that I have made her fingerless gloves. I figured that she will need something to keep her hands warm on those early morning starts.

Crafty days....

I did a spot of badge making on Thursday at the local coffee shop 'Groovalicious'.

We had a choice of many materials but as always I was drawn to the felt.

I made this little one for my MIL for Mothers Day.

Hubby went and chopped down some shrubs in her garden that had gotten way out of hand but it is always nice to get a little present too....

Then I did some extreme knitting, such fun....

This is a sort of inspriation/memento/like board that I have in the hallway.

I add things and take things away occasionally when it gets too cluttered and it is usually where my precious little items go so I can see them often and they don't get lost the big picture....

See how cute this little badge turned out, I love it....

Did you notice my little Pony? 'Pumpkin' is a present from a special friend who is very talented with the needle and felt, you should see her creations, they are are gorgeous.

I have long admired her little horses that she makes and look what arrived in the mail one day....my very own pony! Isn't he sweet and in my favourite colours too....

I am a bit late this week and although Sunday was not spent in my PJ's yesterday was....
(sorry no pictures ;-) )

I did get crafty though and finished my Quant Headband ....

I really enjoyed how this pattern developed. I am not a stripy gal so sock yarn has always been a kind of love /hate relationship. Love the feel of it and the colours and how nice it is to knit with BUT not stripes please....

Well how cool is this!!! I LOVE it and I think there will be more of this entrelac knitting from now on.

She's Leaving on a Jet Plane....

All her bags are packed and she's ready to go....

'Lucy' is on her way!

Aunty Carolyne has taken her on the plane to Brisbane to keep her company while she visits the Doctors and then she will be meeting up with Kate of Dash Robin Design so she can spend some time with her and her family.

After Kate's she will be visiting a few more friends in Australia before heading across to New Zealand, South Africa, United States and finally the United Kingdom. What a holiday, I should have offered to carry her bags!

I lived in London when I was in my early 20's and I used to ride my bike to work across town and thru Hyde Park and often see the Royal Household Cavalry training. Grans house was near the Royal Mews so I would also see all the gorgeous horses getting spruced up for some lovely occasion.

And isn't a Royal Wedding one of the best occasions!

This Friday I would have to say that one of my favourite things is Pomp and Ceremony....

How fantastic that this Friday is the Royal Wedding of William and Kate!

I have had this picture on my inspiration board for years.....

I LOVE that horse in front carrying the drums....

My Grandma and I would walk down the Mall to see the Trooping of the Colour. I love these days of pomp and ceremony, they remind me of my Grandma and hayfever, but mostly of my Grandma. :-)

My parents are in London at the moment visiting my brother, I wonder if they will pop out for a look at the Royals?? Wish I was staying with them right now....

Instead I am off to my SIL's house now to watch the whole thing on TV and I am leaving the boys at home with their dad to watch the history channel.....can't wait!
